Hanthana to Galaha

Nestled just outside Kandy, the Hanthana Mountain Range is a beloved destination for nature lovers, hikers, campers, and birdwatchers. With its misty peaks, lush greenery, and serene atmosphere, Hanthana has even inspired local songwriters to capture its beauty in verse.

Rising 1,240 meters above sea level, the range stretches 20 kilometers southward, connecting Kandy to the quiet town of Galaha. The western slopes are dotted with freshwater springs that feed into Sri Lanka’s longest river, the Mahaweli, while its tributaries carve through the landscape, dividing the range into seven distinct peaks. The tallest among them is Ura Kanda, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
The Hike: From Sarasavi Gama to the 4th Mile Post

This scenic 9-kilometer trek begins at Sarasavi Gama, winding through verdant trails, past bubbling streams, and up gentle slopes. The journey culminates at the 4th Mile Post, where hikers are rewarded with sweeping vistas of Kandy’s rolling hills and tea-draped valleys.

Whether you seek adventure, solitude, or simply a deep breath of fresh mountain air, Hanthana’s tranquil beauty promises an unforgettable escape into nature.
